"Sumimasen," he whispered, bowing his head in a gentle apology.
The woman looked up, startled, and their eyes met for the first time. Kenji felt as though he had been punched in the gut. Her eyes were a deep shade of indigo, almost purple, and they seemed to hold a thousand secrets."Sumimasen," she whispered back, her voice barely audible over the sound of the river.Kenji remained silent, allowing her to compose herself. As she dried her tears, he learned that her name was Yukiko, and she was a Kabuki performer, traveling from town to town, entertaining the populace with traditional dance and theater.
