The Master of Velázquez
A Tale of Art, Passion, and Betrayal in the Court of King Philip IV
It was a chilly winter morning in 1650 when the King of Spain, Philip IV, summoned the young painter Diego Velázquez to his private chambers. Velázquez, then just 28 years old, had been serving as the royal painter for several years, but he had never received a summons as significant as this one. As he entered the velvet-draped room, he spotted the king sitting on his throne, his piercing gaze fixed on the painter."Velázquez, my royal painter," the king began, his voice low and commanding, "I have called for you today to entrust you with a task of great importance.
