The Shadows of Edo
A Tale of Love, Deceit, and the Art of the Kabuki Stage
In the sweltering summer of 1723, the snow had finally begun to melt away, leaving the bustling streets of Edo, Japan's capital city, to steam under the scorching sun. Amidst the cacophony of hawkers calling out their wares and the clanging of pots and pans, a portrait of the Kabuki star, Tsuru Hana, gazed serenely out from the walls of the Ichimura-za theater. Her black hair, piled high on her head, seemed to defy gravity, her delicate features a perfect sculpture of eastern beauty.
