The agony in the garden., Rembrandt van Rijn, circa 1652, etching, During his lifetime, Rembrandt's extraordinary skills as a printmaker were the main source of his international fame. Unlike his oil paintings, prints travelled light and were relatively cheap. For this reason, they soon became very popular with collectors not only within, but also beyond the borders of the Netherlands. Although most of Rembrandt's prints in the Te Papa collection were donated by Bishop Ditlev Monrad in 1869 and Sir John Ilott between 1952 and 1969, a small number of them were mounted in the so-called King George Album of Old Master prints, which was purchased by the Dominion Museum in 1910. Within a few years, however, James McDonald, art assistant, photographer and acting director, had crudely removed them from the album, with their separate exhibition in mind. They have not been returned to the album.
