Father Time pulls aside the curtain of the ruined stage to reveal the burning theater. Amid the ruins sits the sad personification of the Amsterdam Theater with the city's coat of arms and a burnt beehive, from which the bees have escaped, in her hands. Below the stage is a cartouche with the title and Vondel's famous verse ('The world is a play stage: everyone plays his role and gets his share').
