Allegory in Honor of Cardinal Antonio Barberini the Younger (1607-1671) (Design for an Engraving), 1596–1669, Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, highlighted with white, over black chalk, on brown paper, 20-1/2 x 30-3/8 in. (52.0 x 77.2 cm), Drawings, Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini) (Italian, Cortona 1596–1669 Rome), The high finish of this drawing, as well as the two annotations beginning “Incidat ...,” in the hand of an ecclesiastical censor, indicate that it was intended by Pietro da Cortona for his engraver - and indeed the design was reproduced in the same dimensions but in reverse by the Dutch engraver Theodor Matham (1589-1676), a contemporary of the artist who was in Rome in the mid- I630s, a date that accords well with the style of Cortona's drawing
