Artist: Bernardino Lanino, Italian, c.1509-c.1581, Artist, formerly attributed to and after: Gaudenzio Ferrari, Italian, 1470–1576, Two Apostles, study for The Last Supper, Black and white chalk on blue paper, 53.5 × 38.4 cm (21 1/16 × 15 1/8 in.), Bernardino Lanino worked in Milan and, like most artists of his time, fell under the spell of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Last Supper. This drawing relates to Lanino’s own version of the subject in the church of San Nazzaro Maggiore. Like Leonardo, Lanino focused on a range of facial types and expressions, as is evident in this drawing of Saint Peter, at the moment when Christ asks which of the apostles will betray him, and of the young Saint John, who leans on Christ’s shoulder. The figures are at the same scale as in the painting, but rather than a cartoon used to transfer the completed design to the altarpiece, this carefully finished drawing seems to be a specialized sort of collector’s object—a record of the finished painting or of the full-scale cartoon used to produce it., Italian, 16th century, Works on Paper - Drawings and Watercolors
