Artist: Gilles-Marie Oppenord, French, 1672–1742, Artist, formerly attributed to: Jean Bérain, French, 1640–1711, Ornamental panel with Father Time, ca. 1700, Pen and brown ink and gray wash, sheet: 41 × 28.7 cm (16 1/8 × 11 5/16 in.), The son of a craftsman who worked for Louis XIV, Gilles-Marie Oppenord studied in Rome for seven years, drawing ancient monuments as well as buildings by the modern masters Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Back in Paris, Oppenord eventually became chief architect for the Duke of Orléans. While Oppenord’s architectural designs were rarely built, and none survives today, his ornament designs became widely known through prints. This drawing probably dates from shortly after Oppenord’s return from Rome. It alludes to Time, personified here with his scythe and holding a struggling infant. Above him is a canopy and a winged hourglass symbolizing time’s swift passage. The lower part of the drawing is decorated with a male and female term, two nymphs (one holding an arrow pointing downward, a symbol of death) dancing around a draped sculptural figure, and female sphinxes holding the leashes of hounds. , Made in France, French, 18th century, Works on Paper - Drawings and Watercolors
