Artist: Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, Dutch, 1594–1651, Portrait of two gentlemen from Dordrecht, ca. 1630, Black chalk heightened with white (with a few touches of black ink) on buff paper, sheet: 16.8 × 27.9 cm (6 5/8 × 11 in.), This is one of two signed drawings by Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, who, like his more famous son Aelbert and other members of the family, worked in Dordrecht. In this drawing, one of the gentlemen looks at the viewer, perhaps about to speak; the other, in profile, looks at the first. Though their identities are no longer known, the subjects were probably upper-class members of the artist’s community, as they have elegant, fashionable clothes and are accompanied by playful hunting dogs. In the background is a recognizable view of Dordrecht. The work is charming both for the individual psychology of the gentlemen and for the lively handling of the black chalk. , Made in The Netherlands, Dutch, 17th century, Works on Paper - Drawings and Watercolors
