Artist: Leonard Bramer, Dutch, 1596–1674, Dead Abel Mourned by Angels, Pen and black ink and gray wash on brown paper, image: 18.4 × 27.1 cm (7 1/4 × 10 11/16 in.), Leonaert Bramer was a member of the Bentvueghels (Birds of a Feather), a group of Netherlandish artists working in Rome in the early decades of the seventeenth century. Influenced by Caravaggio, Bramer became known as a painter of night scenes; he is thought, in turn, to have influenced Rembrandt. This drawing has a nervous calligraphy and strong contrasts of light and dark that are typical of the artist. Bramer made at least two other drawings of the Dead Christ Mourned by Angels, but no painting of the subject by the artist is known, and this sheet is likely to be one of the hundreds of drawings that he made as ends in themselves. , Made in The Netherlands, Dutch, 17th century, Works on Paper - Drawings and Watercolors
