Artist: Lodewijk Toeput (Pozzoserrato), Flemish, ca. 1550–ca. 1605, Allegory of Winter, Pen and gray-black ink and gray and blue wash over preliminary drawing in pencil, Sheet: 27.3 × 41.6 cm (10 3/4 × 16 3/8in.); Framed: 43.815 × 59.055 cm (17 1/4 × 23 1/4in.), Trained in Antwerp, Lodewijk Toeput made what had become a traditional journey to Italy but, unlike many of his compatriots, decided to settle there. Later visited by many northern European artists, he served as an important contact in the exchange of ideas and styles between the Low Countries and Italy. These two drawings, like many of his idealized landscapes, borrow motifs from both his native Netherlands and his adopted Italy. The drawings constitute half of a series depicting the four seasons.
