Beaupre Antiphonary, Vol. 2, Originally a set of six, this second volume of the surviving three and a half contains the Assumption of the Virgin (August 15th) through the Advent. It, along with the first volume, was made for the Abbess Beatrix of Grammont. It was illuminated for her by the scribe Johannes at Hainaut in 1290 CE. These volumes have undergone several programs of revision. The first two were during its history at the Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Marie of Beaupre, the first after 1476 for abbess Jacquemine Hendricx and the second in the 18th century for the final abbess Angeline de Lossy just before the abbey was seized in the French Revolution. By 1850 the volumes were in the possession of John Ruskin who added several marginal notes and the table of contents, as well as presumably removing most of the marginal illuminations that were by the 19th century deemed inappropriate. These volumes contain a number of historiated initial of various sizes to accompany the musical notation and text. This antiphonary showcases a long history of continued use with clear modifications to both the text and the musical notations as styles and preferences changed at the abbey. Consequently, the Beaupre Antiphonary volumes are an important record of monastic music and prayers from the late medieval through the early modern period.
