Cave of Plato, Joseph Mulder (possibly), after Jan Saenredam, after Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, 1604, The cave of Plato, depicted as a chamber of the heart. The cave is divided in two by a large wall. On the wall are all kinds of personifications (Love, Hope, Faith, Avarice, Drunkenness, Fame, etc.). A fire pot behind these personifications casts their shadows on the cave wall. In the foreground on the right is a large group of people, from different walks of life and religions. They are discussing, but only looking at the shadows of the personifications. They are in the shadows of the wall. To the left in the foreground of the cave, a group of scholars are in the light. They too are debating, but are looking at the personifications and the fire pot. Two scholars are trying to convince those behind the wall to step into the light. In the background a narrow passageway to the world outside the cave. Only three men have noticed the passageway and are walking through. They are in the open air. The print has a Latin inscription with a Bible quote and a dedication., print maker: Joseph Mulder, (possibly), Jan Saenredam, Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, 1694 and/or 1604, paper, engraving, h 160 mm × w 260 mm
