Cyrus W. King, Ilustrated Dictionary, 1840-1853, graphite with touches of black and brown ink on tan wove paper, 11 7/8 in. x 14 7/8 in. (30.16 cm x 37.78 cm), Cyrus William King was an artist, drawing master, engineer, and endlessly creative son of Maine's first governor, William King of Bath, Maine. At the Sagadahoc Agricultural and Horticultural Exhibition in 1868, where his work was heralded, he 'carried off the palm for the display of curious paintings, draftings, and inventions.' The reviewer marveled that the drawing 'contain[ed] a representation of every noun mentioned in the encyclopedia, embracing 13,150 objects grouped together.' King undoubtedly had access to the 1797 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' that was part of the family's library. Some of its eighteen volumes, containing 542 copperplate engravings, survive at Bath's Patten Free Library.
