Four participants in the 1761 competition draw the portrait of the posing lady. On the right is the jury: the painter Vassé (left), the Comte de Caylus (center) and Jean Restout, director of the Academy (right). Paintings hang one above the other on the wall. The purpose of this annual competition, established in 1759, was to encourage drawing of human emotions as part of the drawing program.
