Elias van Nijmegen (Nijmegen 1667 - Rotterdam 1755), Cloelia on the Tiber, wallpaper painting canvas linen oil paint, In 506 BC. the Romans closed truce with the Etrurian king Lars Porsena or Porsenna, in which Porsenna received ten Roman girls and ten boys as hostages. The wave Cloelia belonged to the girls. She managed to escape the guards on horseback with her companions and swam over the Tiber and came back to Rome. Then Porsenna demanded Cloelia from the escaped girls; otherwise he would break the armistice. The Romans gave Cloelia to Porsenna who had promised to do no harm to her. Porsenna praised Cloelia for her courage and eventually gave back to the Romans along with the rest of the boys who had been taken hostage. Later, the Romans erected statue at the via Sacra that represented Cloelia on horseback.
