The numerous editions in the course of the centuries bear witness to the impressive history of this text as an example of popular moral philosophy. This English edition The Picture of Kebes the Theban being a translation of the only extant writing of Kebes, disciple of Philolaus and friend of Socrates, published by the Essex House Press in 1906, is a typical product of the Arts & Crafts movement. Founded by Charles Robert Ashbee in 1898, the Essex House Press was entirely in the tradition of the Kelmscott Press led by William Morris. Great care was taken with the typographical design, as can be seen on the artistically red printed title page. On the last page, the volume concludes with a wild carnation as the Essex House Press printer's logo.
