Folding fan with a double sheet of paper, on which a round, cut-out dot engraving depicting a seated woman surrounded by lovers with a chinoiserie figure with silk clothes on both sides, on a lace-cut frame of bone, This fan is a European imitation of a Chinese type that had developed in the course of the 18th century in Canton from a 17th century South Chinese model. These Cantonese fans, which were wanted because of the particularly large number of small figures with miniature faces painted on ivory, were called 'One Hundred Faces' fans. In contrast to their Chinese examples, the characters on the European imitations not only have a face but also an ivory neck. The clothing of the warrior and the female is composed of glued-on pieces of satin and mother-of-pearl. The chinoiserie-like effect is emphasized by the exotic-looking environment in which these figures are placed. On the reverse of the leaf a symmetrical, classicistic ornament., Francis Wheatley (possibly), c. 1790, blad, stippelgravure, rand om gravure, gezichtje en hals, kleren, montuur, sluitpin, cutting, s 50 cm × l 28.2 cm
