Fragment of a stair stone relief (Baubo, dolphin), tuff, chiseled, Nenfro tuff, Total: Height: 73 cm; Width: 46 cm; Depth: 23.3 cm, Reliefs, Funerary monument, Classical mythology/Antique history, Dolphin, Ornaments, History of Ceres (Demeter), The fragment of an Etruscan staircase stone shows in the upper picture field a squatting naked Baubo with long hair, raised hands and spread legs. In the lower field of the picture a dolphin is shown facing to the right. Below is a braided band, between the picture fields a twisted band. The characteristic stepping as a separation between the vertical rows of picture fields is not preserved. So-called stairstones were almost exclusively made in Tarquinia, one of the most important Etruscan cities and a member of the Twelve Cities League. They possibly served as covers for small chamber tombs or - as support edges suggest - as doorstones. The relief fields mostly depict predators, bucks, sphinxes, centaurs, sea creatures and winged men in a kneeling pattern.
