Frame with allegorical representation of the invention and application of the art of printing. Books with titles on tapes and printing tools are stacked on top of each other around a blank frame. Beneath the frame, intended for the portrait of the printer Armand Guéraud, is a code of law with a sword. In a band at the bottom are, among other things, Chinese characters and hieroglyphs. Meryon went to great lengths to work out the frame, producing fourteen states and constantly changing the titles on the books, along with other details.
