For over three centuries, from the late 15th to the late 18th century, the dissemination of ornaments was an important task of international printmaking. Craftsmen all over Europe were thus able to find out about the latest fashions. Gun shafts wanted to be decorated, porcelain painted, clothing embroidered or armrests carved. The selected, particularly finely engraved Viennese example was used for the handles of cutlery. Ornamental engravings were among the first areas of collection when the Gewerbemuseen were founded in the 19th century.
