Funerary monument for Matilda of Canossa, Funerary monument for Matilda of Canossa in St. Peter's Basilica, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. The sarcophagus depicts the penance of Emperor Henry IV to Pope Gregory VII at the court of Matilda. On the sarcophagus two kneeling putti around a cartouche with text. Above it, in a niche, the statue of Matilda as protectress of the Pope, holding a scepter or staff in one hand and the papal tiara and key in the other. Above the niche, two putti hold a coat of arms with a rose and the motto 'Tuetur et Unit'. Numbered top center: Tabula 31/ page. 109.
