The representation is roughly executed, but it is typical for many works of the Severan period. On the left is Mercury, who holds his herald's staff (lat. caduceus) in his right hand. The left one he has stretched out with a purse. Mercury was not only messenger of the gods, but also god of merchants and thieves. He turns to the god Mars standing on the right. The god of war leans on a large round shield and holds a lance in his left. He is clothed in a robe reaching to his knees, a breastplate and a large helmet. He is depicted in the type of the Mars Ultor (avenger). The two figures remind of statuesque types that may have served as models for the gemmologist.
