Gem in the shape of a scarab (sitting hero), Carnelian, cut, drilled, carnelian, chalcedony, Total: Height: 1.67 cm; Width: 1.32 cm; Depth: 0.77 cm, Body jewelry, glyptic, History of Achilles, Late Classicism (Greek antiquity), The intaglio has the form of a scarab, but is rather summary. On the picture field of the underside, framed by a ribbon, a naked man sitting to the left is depicted. He is sitting on a folding stool (gr. diphros). On his right arm, bent at the knee, he supports his head, in the sense of a thinking man. With his left arm he holds a shield. In front of his right leg a sword pommel can be seen. The images on Etruscan scarabs, which range from the Strict Style (Early Classicism) to Hellenism and show the hero sitting on a diphros, sometimes called Achill, sometimes Theseus. Pausanias, in his description of an Iliupersis picture in the Lesche der Knidier in Delphi, mentions without mentioning his name a seated man, dressed in a purple coat, who is depressed to the extreme. It cannot be proven, but it is probable that the hero depicted here is Achill.
