Gemme (Cupid with the club of Hercules), Agate, Stone cut, Agate, Total: Height: 1,2 cm; Width: 0,98 cm; Depth: 0,38 cm, Hand jewelry, Body jewelry, Glyptic, History of Cupid, Cupid (Eros), Middle Imperial Era, The Gemme shows a very simply worked standing Cupid in frontal view, leaning against a vertical object. This may be a column, but on parallel pieces the club of Hercules is often depicted. The leaning arm seems to hang down beside the column. In his left hand Cupid holds a wreath. For this gemstone an agate was used, which is also called Lagestone because of the different colored rock layers. In this case the lapidary has worked out the surface so thin that the underlying layer shines through. This special form of gemstone cutting is called 'Niccolo'.
