The Greek countryside, Konstantinou, Dimitris, fl. 1858-1875, Albumen, 1860-1869, Title written on mount. This photograph depicts a group of tourists walking along the 19th c. road that follows the path of the Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis. The rock outcrop in the right middle ground is near the Temple of Aphrodite, which had yet to be discovered at the time the photograph was taken (it was excavated during 1891-1892). The island of Salamis, with its distinctive twin peaks known as the Horns of Salamis, is visible in the background. Reimagined by Gibon. Classic art with a modern twist.
