Greek: Flying Eros Ephebe, Unidentified artist, Greek, 3rd–2nd century B.C., Ceramic, Eros, the god of love, was a popular subject for artists during the Hellenistic period of Greco-Roman history. This ceramic figurine shows the youthful god in flight--he has a hole at the top of each shoulder for his wings, cast separately--and his outstretched hands once held a small object, maybe an apple. He is nude, aside from the flowered wreath on his head, and would have been gaily painted with bright colors.
