Group of Louvre, Hydria, clay, painted (ceramic), quickly turned, alternately fired, clay, painted and fired, total: height: 32.4 cm; muzzle diameter: 13.5 cm; diameter: 17.2 cm; base diameter: 9.7 cm; base diameter: 3.7 cm (bottom hole); Weight: 1551.5 g, Ceramics, Profile (side view), Head, Face, Late Classicism (Greek antiquity), The Hydria is one of the few vessel names that are reliably attributed from antiquity. Two horizontal and one vertical handle are striking. The vessel was used to fetch water from public wells, but was also part of the symposium tableware. In lower Italian vase art there are vessels that are partly potted without a bottom or - like this vessel - have a hole in the bottom and served the cult of the dead. They were status symbols to enhance the pomp of the grave and reflect the social position and wealth of the dead and their families. It depicts an elongated female head looking to the left. The hair with a pinned up knot, the so-called lampadion hairstyle, is held together by a hair scarf (Greek kekryphalos). As jewelry in yellow and white additional color a ray tiara, an earring and a two-row necklace are indicated. On the left side in front of the head there is a flower. The backside is occupied by a large palmette, framed by tendrils, each with a fan palmette. The lower end is formed by a wavy band, the upper one by a ribbon.
