The Holy Family with two angels., Guido Reni, artist, 1600-1640, Italy, etching, This etching, drawn and printed by the famous Bolognese artist Guido Reni (1575-1642), epitomises the early Baroque, with its compositional clarity and strongly religious message. It is characterised by Reni's delicate yet spirited use of lines and dots which was widely influential. Although Mary turns away from the viewer in highly effective foreshortening, it isn't hard to guess at her beauty. A pair of heavenly putti hold a cascading bouquet in honour of her and the Christ Child, while Joseph on the right contemplates them. The original inscription was at some stage removed from the bottom of the etching. It read (in translation from the Latin), Mary, Mother of grace, Mother of mercy, shield me from the enemy and receive me at the hour of my death. This relates to a famous Roman Catholic prayer, entitled Mary, Mother of Grace.
