Jan Beukelsz., alias Jan van Leiden was around 1534-35 the self-crowned king of the Anabaptists in Munster, the place of the New Jerusalem. The print shows the moment when Beukelsz. enters the market square to administer justice. Beukelsz. - richly dressed - is depicted in full length and in frontal view, with his right hand leaning on a sword and his right foot resting on the name block. A young servant hands him the bible on which lies the king's crown with globe that resembles the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire. Behind a footman holds his horse by the halter. Two more moments from the history of Jan van Leyden are depicted: after the army had taken Munster in 1535, he was captured on charges of bringing a forbidden religion into the city. He was sentenced to death: on the left, Beukelsz. is tied to a pole, undressed, where he is being worked on with red-hot pincers. The outcome can be seen in the background: Beukelsz.'s body has been put in a cage and hung as a tourist attraction on the south side of the St. Lambertus Church in Münster., print, book illustration, prints, engravings, height 268 mm, width 159 mm, Noord-Nederlands, 1645-09-10 - 1708-06-15, print maker, printmaker, 1701 - 1701, first quarter 18th century, paper, etching, engraving, engraving (printing process), Work conception, Northern Netherlands, after own design by
