It was published in 1892 by the Kelmscott Press as the sixth book of this hand press. The book design was in the hands of William Morris, who designed the floral frame borders and initials. Printed on Batchelor paper with the font 'Golden Type' in red and black print. The frontispiece with an illustration by Edward Burne-Jones, executed in wood engraving by W.H. Hooper, shows Adam and Eve in their post-Paradise existence: he digs up the ground, she spins wool wrapped in a fur dress, the children Cain and Abel sitting at her feet.
