The kyathos served as a scoop to fill the wine-water mixture from the mixing vessel into jugs, drinking bowls or cups during the symposium. The inside and the handle with a narrow central ridge ending in a closed palmette pointing downwards are covered with black shine; likewise the profiled vessel base and the lower quarter of the vessel. In the center of the picture, the god of wine, Dionysus, striding to the right. He is clothed with a long cloak. The bearded head is wreathed. He holds a drinking horn in his left hand, which is led forward. Behind him two vines of wine or ivy sprout forward and one backward. Dionysus is enclosed between two large eyes, which show three concentric circles with a red pupil inside. On either side of the handle is a siren with a bird's body and upright wings. Their faces are white, their hair is shown in brown-red. The additional colors are partially rubbed off.
