Salomonsen, Berlin, wood, lacquered, carved black and red lacquer on wood, Total: Height: 6,6 cm; Diameter: 24 cm; Weight: 1295 g, Lacquer work, Luck, Fate, Los, Yüan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, The box with luck promising ruyi-decor (cloud head motif) is carved as a so-called guri carving lacquer. The technique of guri (Japanese for arched) consists of alternately applying red and black, occasionally ochre, layers of lacquer into which an abstract pattern is cut. The term guri, like many other technical terms in East Asian art history, comes from Japan, although the technique originally comes from China, as findings from the sixth century prove.
