London, Pine, John, Adams, Robert, Vroom, Hendrik Cornelisz., Spiering, François, Lemprière, Clement, Reproduction of a tapestry about the Spanish Armada (28-29 July), English and Spanish fleet in the Channel between Dover and Calais, with the coat of arms of the English Queen Elizabeth I at the top. The representation (numbered IX) is set in an ornamental border with eight portraits of commanders of the English fleet. In the middle above the portrait of Charles Howard, Lord High Admiral and commander in chief of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada. Above and below between the portraits ship's prows with spears and banners and flanked by putti. They are blowing on a trumpet or shell, drumming, writing etc. On the left and right are four putti at a triumphal or memorial column. Two putti decorate the column with garlands. A third putti writes down the events in a book; the fourth holds a sword and an ouroboros in his hand. The ouroboros is a snake biting its own tail and is therefore a symbol of eternity. Furthermore, two eagles with lightning bolts, the four winds and two lions with a column or trident and a coat of arms. The right one shows the Anchor of Hope, the coat of arms of the English Admiralty.
