The eyes themselves are white. The ears are decorated with a white round earring. Since the 6th century B.C. figurative glass beads were widespread in the Phoenician trading area. Four types of male heads can be distinguished: Demon heads, male heads with straight hair, beard and headband, with wavy hair and those with wavy hair and long, vertically furrowed beards. Since the beard is not preserved, this mask bead can only roughly be assigned to the latter two types. Mask pearls served less as ornamental jewelry, but mainly as apotrophic talismans. They are a direct or symbolic representation of the most important gods Baal-Hammon and Astarte-Tanit. Most of the representations are of men or demons. Especially blue and green color were considered to be evil-defensive. In addition there is the strikingly piercing look of the eyes. Grave finds prove that the beads not only accompanied and protected the living, but also the dead.
