Meckenem, Israhel van, Antwerp, Heyden, Pieter van der, Verbeelde vragen, recto bottom right - stamped, Five figures in a row, each depicting a proverb on the theme of dishonesty and opportunism versus honesty and modesty. On the right is King David, who expresses the moral of the proverbs. He advocates a life of man in which everything one possesses is acquired through honesty, rather than a life in which one enriches oneself dishonestly. Above the head of each figure is a line in Latin, below each figure a two-line verse in Dutch. On the far left is a man with a cat on his shoulder that is licking him, next to him a man at a grindstone who holds his cloak open. In the middle is a man with a stick or axe over his shoulder and one in his hand, next to him a man who is hitting a sickle with a hammer. On the far right is King David with his harp. The implication is that it is better to possess little, through honesty, than much through dishonesty. This is depicted by the figure in the middle., print, prints, verso - stamped, height 213 mm, width 261 mm, South Netherlands, 1540 - 1582, print maker, printmaker, 1540 - 1572, paper, engraving, engraving (printing process), Work conception, German, 1440 - 1517
