The theatre sits on a heap of rubble with the coat of arms of Amsterdam and a burnt beehive. The bees have escaped. Father Time pulls aside the curtain of the ruined stage to reveal the burning theatre. Under the stage a cartouche with the title and the well-known verse by Vondel ('The world is a play stage: everyone plays his role and gets his share').
