He is seated, visible to the knees, straight in front and facing the viewer. With his left hand he leans on his lap and the right arm leans on the table to his left. He makes an open gesture with his right hand. He is wearing a brown jacket with a white shirt and a light blue shawl over his lap. In the background to the right is a view outwards, with some trees. On the left is a classic statue next to two columns. Signed on the windowsill. The painting is in a gilded wooden frame. On the back of the panel is painted a family crest with the text De Heere Mr Gerrit de Bye. Secretary of the Court of Audit of Der Stad Leyden. Gebr: Den 6. Jan: 1688. Died. The 16 July 1746, as well as quarter arms of De Bije, Ted. Berkhout, Warmont, Beeresteyn, Paauw, Hartigvelt, Ruijtenburg and Briell van Welhoek.
