painting, Anonymous, first half 17th century, canvas, oil paint, painted, General (dimensions according to catalog 1983): 105 × 190cm (1050 × 1900mm), With frame: 127.5 × 212.1 × 6.6cm (1275 × 2121 × 66mm), history piece, moat, soldier, cityscape, Leiden, History piece depicting the failure of the Boshuyser redoubt, in the early morning of July 29, 1574, during the Siege of Leiden. In the background on the right, the city of Leiden rises, bounded on the left by the Rhine extending in depth from the left in the foreground and on the right by a faint distance. In the left foreground a number of city soldiers and gunners, marked by white bracelets, pierce with their scavenger hunters the merciful begging Spaniards, who are still trying to flee from the rampart, completely overwhelmed and partly already dead. From the right, the freebooters jumping over the polders' locks with their distant hunters approaching, while a large group of citizens coming out of the Wittepoort diverts the attention of the Spaniards. The same is done with the aid of a ship that fires violently at the enemy placed at the General Court across the Rhine. Closer to the city, to the left of the city's leftmost stronghold, three beacons and many hard-to-distinguish warriors. There are many armed civilians on the ramparts. On the city wall, which starts on the left with the tower the Pelican, there are two stand mills. A drawbridge and an outer gate with large stone balls give access to the Wittepoort; more to the right the Schutters- en Sint Catharinatoren, the Korenmakerstoren and the Blauwetoren, and finally four wal towers. The buildings in the city can be distinguished from left to right: the Vrouwekerk, the town hall tower, the Hooglandse Kerk, the Pieterskerk, the Bagijnhof and the tower of the Saaihal. Left behind the court (van Oegstgeest?) And also three more towers to the right. Not signed. The painting is in a black-painted wooden frame
