He is depicted right from the front, sitting in a chair, the left arm supported by a cushion from the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland (recognizable by the coat of arms of Count Willem II of Holland), which is placed on a carved, gilded table with marble top. LEYDEN on the silver tabard twice and he wears a medallion with a portrait. To his left a column with a statue of justice in front of it and a red curtain. On the right behind him a niche crowned by the family crest of Van den Bergh: three windows with a helmet sign and two crossed beams of lictors. In the niche in Roman numerals ÆT: LXXXII .. Signed on the back. The painting is in a wooden frame. On the back of the panel is Mr Johan van [den Bergh] Born 25 August [1664] Died 11 November 1755 with the signature below.
