Paris Painter, Band Painter, Campana Group, Kleinmeisterschale (Running Hermes with Kerykeion), clay, quickly turned, painted (ceramic), alternately fired, disc-turned, clay, total: Height: 11.8 cm; Diameter: 22 cm, ceramic, history of Mercury (Hermes), late archaic, antiquity, This bowl was made in the manner of the Attic small master bowls, but in Etruria. Base, lower part of the outside of the bowl and the handles are black varnished. The two registers are clayey and separated by a line of varnish. In the lower register there is a small palmette with incised leaves and a large core on each side. They rest on a curved stem that rolls up into two volutes. The inside of the bowl is black varnished, with the exception of the medallion and a narrow strip below the rim. The medallion shows the god Hermes running to the left, recognizable by a long herald's staff (Greek Kerykeion) as well as his travelling hat and winged shoes. He has stretched out his right arm. An eagle flies in front of him, indicating his function as messenger of the gods (of Zeus). The figure is adapted to the round. Coat, hat, parts of the wings are indicated in red additional color. The medallion is framed by a tongue band with alternating black and red tongues and three decorative bands, two of them with dot patterns. The color of the clay, the design of the image and the coloring show that it is not an Attic vase but an Etruscan bowl, which can be attributed to the so-called Pontic ceramics.
