Pether, William, Wright of Derby, Joseph, Art Appreciation: Viewing the Gladiator Borghese, The three gentlemen, of whom the young man holding up the drawing may represent Joseph Wright of Derby himself, compare by candlelight a greatly reduced copy of the so-called gladiator Borghese with a drawing of the statue. The original was excavated in Rome in 1611 and acquired by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. It was one of the most famous ancient statues in Rome and countless copies were made of it. Wright of Derby, who painted the picture around 1764, must have known such a copy in his circle.
