Portrait of the Empress Faustina Maior, property of the Hamburg Art Collections Foundation, marble, chiseled, Total: Height: 46.6 cm; Width: 36.8 cm; Depth: 26.5 cm, sculptures, three-dimensional sculptures, woman, head, face, ruler portrait, state portrait, portrait, queen, empress, Faustina Maior, Middle Imperial Period, Roman antiquity, The portrait shows Faustina Maior (née B. 105 AD), the wife of the emperor Antoninus Pius. When her husband ascended the throne on July 10, 138 A.D, she received the honorary name 'Augusta' (the sublime) to mark her participation in the emperor's cult. After her death in 141 A.D, Antoninus had her declared a goddess by the senate and built a temple for her at the Forum Romanum. The physiognomy and hairstyle of this portrait of Faustina can be compared to the probably most beautiful replica in Dresden, which gave the portrait its name. The design of the hairstyle appears complicated and is no longer comprehensible today. Characteristic features are above all the forehead hair rosettes and the large flat nest from the plait that is led around. In view of the amount of hair required, the use of foreign hair must also be assumed. This head is characterized by a soft and contourless formation of the carnation on the mouth, eyes and cheeks, where the distinct antonine style can be recognized. In addition to the Dresden type, two other portrait types are known, which are characterized by a much simpler hairstyle, which was more likely to meet the requirements of the widest possible distribution. The identification of the Faustina is mainly based on a comparison with coin portraits.
