Portrait of Empress Livia (type Marbury Hall), marble, chiseled, marble, Total: Height: 24 cm; Width: 20 cm; Depth: 17 cm, sculptures, head picture, head, face, portrait, queen, empress, Livia Drusilla, Augustus, Early Imperial Period, Roman antiquity, In the head you can see Livia, the wife of Emperor Augustus. As the back shows, the head was made from an architectural fragment. The stone is bevelled on the left side at the back and has a 4 cm deep incision in the middle. To conceal this, the head was probably originally inserted into a robe statue. Characteristic are the broad straight forehead, the flat, wide open eyes, the full cheeks, the small, tightly closed mouth and the firm chin. Over the forehead falls a gently wavy roll (lat. nodus), which is braided to a narrow plait in the middle of the head at the back. Ovid recommends this hairstyle in his Ars Amatoria (3, 139) for girls with roundish features). The facial skin of the head is polished smooth, while the hair has been left rough for better adhesion of a color application. Small remnants of the original coloration of the pupils have been preserved. Livia Drusilla was born on January 30, 58 B.C. as the daughter of Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus and Alfidia. In her first marriage she married Tiberius Claudius Nero in 43 B.C, in the second one in 38 B.C. she finally married Octavianus. She survived him by 15 years and died aged 86 years. As in the portraits of Augustus, the various types of portraits of Livia hardly show anything of her natural ageing in a long life.
