Portrait of an Roman, property of the Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen with the collaboration of the Campe'schen Historische Kunststiftung, marble, chiseled, Marble, chiseled, Total: Height: 34 cm; Width: 20.8 cm; Depth: 22.5 cm, sculptures, funerary monument, head portrait, historical person, man, portrait, late Republican, The roundish head with stocky proportions is probably the most realistic portrait of a higher military leader. Concentrated, almost brutal physical strength is decisive for the impression of this head, which - inserted into a Togastatue - originally probably belonged to a tomb statue. The portrait features and coincidences of the appearance are depicted in unsparing openness: the large, protruding ears, the crooked mouth, the crow's feet at the eyes, the cheek warts and the short-cropped skull. The narrow eyes with the strong brows and frowning give the face its dark, determined expression. The stern physiognomy depicts values of the aristocracy of the late Roman Republic: care (lat. cura) and responsibility for the res publica, dignity (lat. gravitas), seriousness (lat. severitas), constancy (lat. constantia) and auctoritas. Fidelity (lat. fides) shows a scar on the forehead, which testifies to an injury suffered in battle. The head belongs to those veristic portraits of the 1st century B.C, which are mainly known from numerous grave reliefs and which are to be understood primarily as self-portrayal of the middle class.
