Portrait of a young Roman woman, marble, chiseled, marble, Total: Height: 28 cm; Width: 19 cm; Depth: 21.5 cm, sculptures, three-dimensional sculptures, portrait, head, face, Bruttia Crispina, Middle Imperial Period, Commodus, Septimius Severus, Roman Antiquity, The delicately moving face of porcelain-like smoothness contrasts clearly with the rough surface of the hair sections. This contrast is one of the main attractions of this qualitatively excellent head, of which it cannot be said with certainty whether it was once part of a statue or bust. The characteristic hairstyle with a central parting, the hair waves on the sides and the radial bun or knot at the back of the head has led the interpretation to Bruttia Crispina, who was married to Commodus, the later emperor, when she was about seventeen years old in 178 AD. Already in the winter 182/3 A.D, she was connected with a conspiracy against Commodus, was banished to Capri and executed in 187 A.D. The question of whether the portrait of a member of the imperial family or a private portrait is preserved is complicated by the fact that, on the one hand, only a few free-standing sculptural portraits of Crispina have been generally accepted as authentic and, on the other hand, the adoption of imperial hairstyles by private individuals was widespread.
