Relief with Arion on the Dolphin above the door to the Assurance Room in the Stadhuis on Dam, Hubert Quellinus, after Artus Quellinus (I), 1719 - 1783, Relief with Arion on the Dolphin above the door to the Assurance Room in the north gallery of the Stadhuis on Dam, Amsterdam. Seated on a dolphin he plays his zither or lyre. In the background on the right is a ship with the Amsterdam flag and the city's coat of arms. There are several versions of the myth of Arion. However, what recurs in every version is that thanks to his singing and playing of a song, he was saved by a dolphin sent by Apollo. Through his performance, Arion in fact secured his salvation - in the Assurance Room one could insure merchandise. Numbered at lower right: LVII., print maker: Hubert Quellinus, Hubert Quellinus, Artus Quellinus (I), Amsterdam, 1663 and/or 1719 - 1783, paper, etching, engraving, h 205 mm × w 292 mm
