Rest on the flight into Egypt., Camillo Procaccini, artist, 1587-1590, Italy, etching, Camillo Procaccini (1551-1629) was an Italian painter. He has been posthumously referred to as the 'Vasari of Lombardy' for his prolific decorative Mannerist church and villa frescoes, and the stylistic comparison they offer to the better known Florentine artist and writer. Born in Bologna, Camillo was the son of the painter Ercole Procaccini the Elder, and older brother to Giulio Cesare and Carlo Antonio, both painters. In the late 1580s he moved from Bologna/ Reggio Emilio to Milan. He was an accomplished draftsman, and it is likely that this engraving was based on a drawing, present whereabouts unknown. Depicting the well-known episode of the Holy Family and their rest on the flight to Egypt, the luxuriant plant life, unusual for this famously arid part of the world, is celebrated. Joseph acts as a homely, worldly foil to the haloed Madonna and Child, and urges the spectator to look reverently upon them. In amusingly close justaposition to Joseph is the donkey that carried them on their flight.
