Richard Luksch, Two female figures for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, Foundation of the BAT Cigarette Factory, Hamburg, faience, tin glaze, object (a): height: 202 cm; width: 64 cm; heel height: 60 cm, monogrammed: incised mark on the base of b): RL, sculptures, ceramics, standing female nude, Art Nouveau, The two larger-than-life faience figures were originally created by the Viennese Art Nouveau artist Richard Luksch for the entrance façade of the famous Purkersdorf Sanatorium near Vienna, before they were installed in the garden of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, another important total work of art by Joseph Hoffmann. In these two lascivious, nervously spinning female figures, influences from the art of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) are just as palpable as the spirit of the erotic art of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). In 1907 Luksch accepted a call as professor of sculpture at the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts and also designed numerous public sculptures in the city until 1936.
