On the front and back is the coat of arms of the French emperor Napoleon III, in the corners his monogram. The title and volume number are noted on the spine. The endpapers are of green changeant with a border decoration of French lilies in gold print. The album contains 99 sheets of gold-on-cut, each containing one to three photographs. The album is part of an ensemble of four that documented, step by step, the construction of the new Louvre between 1854 and 1857, commissioned by the French government. The albums were offered as representational copies to the emperor, friendly heads of state, ministers (such as the Rijksmuseum copy) and libraries. Thirty-six such sets were assembled, each containing about 550 photographs.
